Oregon has seen a wide range of strange, arguably supernatural activity over the years. Among cryptozoologists (people that study cryptids, or beings that are not recognized by science) Oregon has something of a reputation. Oregon hosts vast forests and mountain ranges. It doesn’t seem impossible that there’s something lurking there that we haven’t discovered.

Below, you’ll find a list of the most interesting of those locations to be used as you please in the Halloween season. I suggest you take care, though – even if you don’t believe, you should still respect that which eludes you.

  1. Malheur Butte

A mountain out in eastern Oregon, Malheur Butte is a mysterious dead volcano said to have seen the meetings of witches, strange apparitions, and imp-like creatures that make strange noises. The stories will vary depending on who you ask, but one thing is certain: if you want to go somewhere haunted this October, this would be a good bet.

  1. The McMenamins White Eagle Saloon & Motel

If you’re looking for something closer to home, this saloon, located in downtown Portland, has an intricate and somewhat well-known past – people have reported seeing ghosts, experiencing sleep paralysis, and more. The facility has commented on it on their website, saying “The White Eagle is one of the most storied joints in the Northwest. And with any good watering hole, the line between fact and fiction — and between this world and the other — seems to have been thoroughly and wonderfully blurred. Tales of ghosts and mortal mischief abound, seemingly with no regard for historic accuracy….

But while they say most accounts are false, I’ll let you make that decision on your own.

  1. Candy Cane Park

With the name already sounding like something out of a horror movie, this park is supposedly the place a woman was murdered. However, her spirit seems relatively benevolent – as she previously haunted the merry-go-round, it seems she’s now moved on to the park benches.

  1. Lone Fir Cemetery

Returning to a classic, the trope of haunted graveyards, this would be the one to visit. As a historical cemetery, the grounds serve as a resting place for many pioneers, settlers, and prominent local figures. Walking through it at night may give you the chills you’re searching for – just remember not to provoke the spirits.

  1.  Highway 101

Located near Cannon Beach, this is the one that personally freaks me out the most. Along this highway by the sea, people have reported seeing a being wrapped in bandages at the side of the road, or even in their backseat in the rear view mirror. It’s rumored that it will jump in the car with you if you manage to find it – so make sure to keep an eye out.

While this was kept mainly to hauntings and supernatural occurrences, Oregon has also had it’s fair share of cryptid sightings – so be sure to do your research this October. You never know what you might stumble upon.

Keep your eyes open, and trust your gut if your senses fail you. The truth is out there – never stop believing.
