As winter break was on its way, so was the workload at SMA.

Perhaps you were so busy before the holiday break that you missed out on some of the holiday spirit. Of course Christmas trees and lights are the classics, but what else has been going on?

I took a trip to the Expo Center to check out “America’s Largest Christmas Bazaar.” I certainly did not regret going. Many small vendors had come to the large event to publicize their unique holiday-themed ideas.

Lloyd Center is also known for its displays of holiday spirit. As I walked in the doors,  I was dazzled by the red and silver Christmas decorations dangling from the ceiling. In the heart of the popular Portland mall, there also stood a large Christmas tree surrounded by many ice-skaters looping around.

Portlanders bundled up in their coats and hats to walk the chilly December streets. The cold never stops Portlanders from doing what they love. There are those who would do anything to experience Portland’s classic holiday traditions, even if that means navigating around big crowds and weather that makes you freeze.

I found exactly that at Zoo Lights: packs of people gathered to see this magnificent sight. Lights of many different shapes, colors, and sizes encompassed the night sky, fascinating people of all ages, and calling them to pause and take pictures on their phone. And sure, lights are the special part, but who could go to the zoo without catching a glimpse of the animals? Crowds crammed outside animal enclosures with phones out, awaiting the picture perfect moment.

With plenty of options to celebrate the holidays, Portland compels residents and guests to make the most of it. You don’t need to travel over the break to relax and have a good time. You can find peace right where you are with the people you love.
